history - How and why were linkers first developed as tools separate from compilers? -
Actually, I'm just curious about history.
When was the first linker written? What was the argument on time? As the development of multi-language was an issue? Was the goal of this platform? What languages and compilers were supported? According to the concept made by John Levin, at least, around 1960 with the significant development of the modern linkage editor in 1960. They are used by different programs to allow the reuse of libraries of different modules, which they require. I suggest reading text (links above Google Book Search) for more information.
