osx - How to use option key combinations in a text widget -

On the Mac, I can find a single-character character by typing + "After one - seen
When using a text widget, the option + `wants to leave the reason for the combination unexpectedly.
Is there any way to get around this? Is there any compulsion that will take care of it, and allow me to include one character in the lesson. The language I am working with (wolf) has about 8 special characters.
Actually I just want to provide 'normal' Mac input coding.
